Food, Friendship, and Service: Shlomi’s Food Truck

Q: Can you briefly share the story of how your initiative began?
A: We’re not an organization but a grassroots initiative started by army veteran Shlomi Ohaion. On October 8, 2023, he began serving soldiers pitot filled with fresh, comforting food, and he hasn’t stopped since. Nearly two years later, Shlomi is still running the food truck daily, personally handling the shopping, equipment, and utilities needed to keep it going.
Q: What inspired you to step up and start this initiative?
A: For Shlomi, it was simple: soldiers needed nourishing meals and a taste of home. For many of our volunteers, the inspiration comes from having children in the IDF or a strong desire to contribute to the “war effort.” Providing food may seem small, but it’s really a “gastronomic hug” for those on the frontlines.
Q: How have volunteers and supporters played a role in your work so far?
A: Volunteers are at the heart of the truck. Many first served outside Barzilai Hospital during the early days of the war and later joined Shlomi. Now, using an online sign up sheet and WhatsApp, we staff the food truck Sunday to Thursday, preparing 2,000 to 3,000 sandwiches weekly.
Q: What has been particularly challenging, and has anything come more easily than expected?
A: The hardest part is ensuring enough volunteers and funds to cover food and utilities. What comes more easily is the incredible sense of camaraderie. Volunteering has created deep friendships and a meaningful routine for many of us.
Q: Looking ahead, what impact do you hope your initiative will continue to make?
A: Our greatest hope is that one day the food truck won’t be needed, because our soldiers will all be home safe, and we’ll never have to fry another schnitzel again.
Volunteers are always welcome, every volunteer helps keep the truck serving those who serve us all.
